Silla Heart Earrings

Large earrings created from flattened sheets of 22-karat gold in spade-like shapes that move elegantly with the wearer. Loren said, "I fell in love with a traveling exhibition of treasures from Tillya Teppe, a burial site in Afghanistan that was a cultural crossroads. A nomadic prince was buried with his six wives and I became obsessed with their jewelry. They wore incredible belts and crowns that were meant to travel and were composed of hammered sheets of gold that were thin but substantial. They carried their wealth in these objects and they were hammered to a beautiful burnished finish. I studied the shapes and the metal treatment and that became the backbone of the Silla collection. I wanted to capture the treatment of the gold surface of their treasure. I challenged myself to create interesting depth, movement and texture with one material."
