Loren Teetelli found her talent for making after working as an archaeologist and a conservator at the American Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, both in New York. To better understand the objects she was conserving, Teetelli turned to metalsmithing classes and found a passion for creating. While never undergoing formal training, Teetelli has sought-out masters of specialized techniques not widely practiced today and has explored ancient metalsmithing on her own guided by an extensive library and appreciation for objects. Teetelli employs her knowledge of ancient civilizations, attention to minute details, and talent for making to create rare and beautiful jewels that will be treasured for centuries to come.
“Loren Teetelli mines ancient treasures for inspiration: King Tut’s cache of jewels, Greek artifacts. Hers is a physically strenuous process that involves first melting gold flakes and blending the liquid with silver and copper alloys to create a 22-karat gold, then pulling it into wire, weaving it into chains, hammering it, and granulating it to create her richly textured pieces.”
Our owl, Bobo, is drawn from the legend of Athena’s owl, Bubo, who sits on her shoulder and supplies wisdom and perspective. According to Loren, “My dad’s family is from Athens, and Greek culture and stories were woven into our lives. My family keeps sculptures of Bobo around our homes for protection. Bobo has become a symbol for Loren Nicole. He represents our commitment to scholarship, historical foundation, and reverence for the wisdom of masters that have come before.”
Loren's studio in southern California is filled with art, curiosities and ethnographic collections from her travels that inspire her designs and techniques. An ancient Roman hammer displayed on the wall is used to create the signature Loren Nicole textured finish.
