Loren Nicole combines ancient technique and modern design into luminous 22-karat gold jewels with a sense of wonder, history, and beauty.

We draw on metalsmithing motifs, techniques, and lore from ancient civilizations, looking to Egyptian, Roman, Greek, Viking and other cultures. Our handmade chain, hollow form, chasing, repousse, and granulation work are all done as they have been for thousands of years. Loren says, “I want to keep a record of these incredible techniques. They are vehicles for storytelling.”

Chain: link by link

We have a full Chain Library of intricate handwoven 22 karat-gold chains. The hours spent weaving the chains give them a weighty, sinuous feel, with consideration given to each curve and knot. All the elements are handmade and detailed using the same techniques that artisans have used for more than 4,000 years. Handwoven chain feels wonderful against the body, and the structure softens with wear, becoming perfectly tuned to the wearer. Handmade chain is incredibly rare in the modern era and our iconic chains are highly sought after.

Granulation: Silken Textures

An ancient goldsmithing technique where tiny spheres of gold are hand placed on a jewel to form textures or patterns. Granulation dates back at least 5,000 years to the Sumerians and has been found in cultures all over the world including in Greek, Etruscan, and Viking jewelry. Once the spheres are placed, the final step requires fusing the balls to the surface, a tricky process that can result in failure of the entire piece. Loren Teetelli has mastered the notoriously difficult technique, and her granulation designs have a rich, silken texture.

Hollow Forms: Bold Designs

Most of the rounded forms in Loren Nicole jewelry, including the orbs and the rings, are painstakingly hand-raised from flat sheets of gold, a process that can take hours or weeks depending on the complexity of the piece. Each design is a unique object. Our signet rings are designed to perfectly hold the one-of-a-kind gemstone at the center. Some are finished with an antique Roman hammer to create an organic matte finish, reminiscent of the patina of time. Other beads and rings are finished with granulation or openwork designs. Creating everything from a flat sheet allows for endless possibilities.

Chasing and Repoussé: Sculpting Metal

Chasing and repoussé involves working a flat sheet of metal using a hammer and handmade tools to create a raised design. Chasing is refining the design on the front, while repoussé is pushing metal up into a design from the back. This technique is ancient but became popular and refined in the Florentine region of Italy, where it is practiced by master artisans today. It requires patience and tremendous skill to shift enough metal on a flat sheet to being raising a design without breaking through.

"Intricately woven chains, finely executed granulation and hammered surfaces have a warmth and texture that immediately convey the painstaking labor that goes into their creation."

Our Gems

Loren Nicole is recognized for a unique color palettes and eye for unusual stones. We source gemstones form artisanal and small-scale mining operations whenever possible. Most of these gems are mined by hand, lessening the environmental impact. Our standards for quality and ethics led us to Idar-Oberstein, Germany, a town prized for their lapidary skills. We work closely with these master artisans, often from a lineage of stone cutters, to bring our designs to life.
